My Performance Art Video
Here’s the video on my performance assignment for class. I danced for 30 minutes to different types of music in Vaughn Center at the University of Tampa. I started dancing to Edith Piaf, then Frank Sinatra, and ended with more popular music like Daft Punk and Deadmau5. The idea was to decontextualize dancing to iconic songs by doing it in a populated area. I wanted to break down the barrier of embarrassment for the audience to join me in my dancing. In this sense, audience interaction was essential for my performance to be successful.
I didn’t quite accomplish the goal to the level I had imagined, but the objective was, well… you’ll see! Here is Dancing without Stars:

I loved the dancing idea for the video. Incorporating other people at the end was great.

This was one of many good ideas, and it looked like you had fun. I’m glad you were able to engage some people, even though it wasn’t as many as you would have liked. Good job!

This was such a cute idea. I loved that you started out with a more classical dance and that you were dressed up. It was funny that no one really paid that much attention. Eventhough you didn’t get a huge crowd, at least you got a party going towards the end. Nice Job!

I wish I saw this live! Very funny! I see various groups dancing in that lobby every once in a while so this wasn’t too weird; however, this was a great performance. Your attire and music selection were great!

I think this is great how your performanace begged people to pay attention to you. I also really love the way people began to intereact and dance along!

I’m sorry that I couldn’t be a part of this, but it looks like you had fun anyway! I thought it was really funny that for the most part everyone ignored you until the music got more popular, and then then started to dance along

i loved the transitions of the music!! i thought it was funny that people one their cell phones were too busy to acknowledge your existence. i thought it was cute how you and claudia elegantly danced together. great idea!

Awesome shot with the classy romantic dancing right next to the “caution wet” sign. I loved in the end when random people came together and danced. We see this all the time with organizations tabling in vaughn with music. We very rarely hear Frank Sinatra however!

I guess this is what Santiago meant when he told us that performace art is about endurance. That was a long time to dance in the lobby! It looks like you had a lot of fun though, and I really enjoyed watching your performance art and watching people’s reactions to it.

It’s too bad that the lobby hadn’t been more crowded while you were doing this. Regardless though I liked your piece it was funny to see two people not only dancing in a public place, but dressed in full formal attire. I like how you and your partner went the extra mile to make it more noticeable and more awkward for the audience.

This was so cool! I really wanted to slow dance with my bf in public for my performance but he didn’t want to haha but I’m glad you did! I wish you had done it somewhere more public like a mall, because it would have been interesting to see if people would have joined in off campus.

I like how your plans grew infectious to people around you and how there were a lot of people that joined you in dancing by the end. Of course, the reaction of people ignoring what was going on was priceless to watch, but I would have probably acted in the same way. All in all, it was a very fun video.
